MI PEREIRA - AGAIZER

Mi Pereira is a visual artist and currently lives in Divinópolis/MG. She discovered dyslexia at the age of 19, and with professional support she was able to reframe the difficulty as a gift, perceiving dyslexia as her identity, something that gives her contour. Through art, she materializes her pains, anguish, loves and joys.

CENSORSHIP

An image of a figure with hands covering its eyes, mouth and chest, but with hair composed of flowers creates a visual representation of how a person with dyslexia can feel in the world. "Censorship" refers to the fact that being dyslexic comes with being and thinking in a different way, in many moments not being able to complete actions or tasks that, to the majority, may seem simple and uneventful. Even in a universe of denials, the capacity of building and developing a world of possibilities exists - and art has an essential role in this process. In the face of limitations and restrictions, Mi (Agaizer) Pereira, who "discovered" dyslexia when entering college, couldn't write for years. The constant criticism of her mistakes in ortography created a blockage. Her therapist was the person who suggested she could express herself through painting, taking of herself the hands that censored and leaving the ideas in her brain to multiply.

WOMEN IN ME

"Mulheres em mim" integrates the project "Sinestesia", in which the artist paints colors that music and sounds suggest to her.

This connection between distinctive senses provides her work more ample connotations, characterized by the permanent search in her work to talk about herself and the world. That way, a diversity of plastic interpretations is installed, which comes from internal restlessness, directed towards a fulfillment.

Each creation conducts the observer to dive into itself in the search of a deeper reflection about the meaning of its own existence, and the collectivity in which it's inserted and the universe.

HOME

The image deals with several archetypal elements associated with motherhood. The breasts and the uterus are linked to organic aspects of the tree of life, the so-called “axis mundi”, the axis of the world that creates links between the depths of the earth, the trunk and the branches that spread across the sky. Analougously, the image generates reflections on the meanings of the feminine and its links with the body, as the home of existence, and with the birth and existential journey of each one of us.

DIVERGENT

Elements like a tree, heart, and sky are essential to the image. Each symbolizes archetypal aspects that contribute to the visual reading of the work. Nature’s cycle of birth/life/death connects the past, present, and future and reflects the feminine, turning this piece into an act of love for life.

MI
by herself

I discovered dyslexia at the age of 19 when I asked a Portuguese teacher for help with my writing difficulties. Years later, getting multidisciplinary follow-up and what was a difficulty became a gift. Being dyslexic is not a diagnosis for me,  it is an identity,  it is an element that gives me contour. For years I had a writing block,  and to be able to express myself,  my psychologist suggested painting and since then this has been my way to express myself,  to put myself in the world,  to be who I am.
