The poem focuses on the presence of an absence. This is how the word "saudade" (a Portuguese word expressing a deep longing or nostalgia) is often defined. What remains of those who have departed is an important element in daily life, because it is in everyday life that many voids remain unfilled. The text addresses the issue with delicacy and sensitivity, without falling into sentimentality, but with an elegant discussion of the void a person can leave, both physically and through the way they dealt with their belongings.
